Behind the September 2020 Issue

Vogue Australia and the National Gallery of Australia held an intimate virtual event that took you behind the importance of our September 2020 Hope issue.

Edwina McCann, editor-in-chief, Vogue Australia, was in conversation with the Director of the National Gallery of Australia, Nick Mitzevich, and Kelli Cole, Curator of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art at the National Gallery of Australia.

The September cover looks and feels like no other. That is because in such hard times we wanted to offer you hope. In April, led by Anna Wintour, all of the editors of Vogue met virtually to discuss how we might work together to offer our readers a message of optimism. Therefore hope is the word that appears on each of Vogue’s 26 September issues published around the world in 2020.

For Vogue Australia, looking to illustrate this word led us to the work of Betty Muffler. We worked closely with the National Gallery of Australia (NGA) to commission Betty, who is renowned as a great painter and one of the best Ngangkari (spiritual healers) in the Lands. When the world went into lockdown, Betty painted to heal herself, her people, and her Country.

The event was held on Tuesday 8 December and was exclusive to Vogue VIPs, National Gallery of Australia Members, and subscribers to The Australian.
